We’ve discovered this unwanted, absolutely, certainly Victorian era wedding gown, “I can tell by these stitches.” Katie is full of exquisite vintage knowledge. Still felt like summer. We stepped carefully down to the river by the mill. Molly seemed confident there was no poison ivy in our path, and she’s an experienced herbalist and plant healing wonder girl so I trusted fully. We talked about plant magic, out of body experiences and how to meditate. She’s easy to exist around, I think our states of mind shined through in the photos we took together. I put together a two piece suit that I don’t wear enough, and no blouse, just a waist-cinching knitted corset. Ayu brings her Doc Martin’s, perfect skin (I will never put anything besides eyeshadow and lip gloss on this girl), and her insanely relaxed, photogenic ambience. It’s way too cold to shoot outside, but this is the only day we have, so we explore the rooms and halls surrounding my 1800s studio space and get right to effortless “work”. She brought her mega sweet best friend Ann, who helped us coordinate and balance every photograph. Not to mention Sami has perfect taste in bathing suits and brought 3 or 4 for us to pair with the cowgirl boots I’d found and the woven sunhat. We loved that our location looked and felt like a jungle despite being neck deep in the New England coast. Summer is so saturated. We turned the shoot into two parts when we re-styled her in long a vintage slip and went down by the water. How I felt after sorting through these images, capturing something I thought might be unattainable, was incomparable. This shoot was definitely influenced and inspired by my exposure to the Marc Jacobs Daisy campaigns, some of the first fashion films and photos I experienced. And a love for French pastry. Ayu and I want to hang out and it always turns creative, so she brings her friend Adrian along, who does abstract, colorful makeup. I took some time to make a small installation deep in the trees, a hanging curtain of flower buds, and later we pluck them apart to shower Ayu in petals. I bought a grocery store bouquet (I didn’t have a favorite florist yet) and threw together two outfits that were new spring favorites from my personal wardrobe that I knew should be photographed. Audrey and I were both so jazzed to get outside on this spring day and see what would happen. I still wasn’t sure what I was doing exactly, didn’t have a goal. But I knew the sky was a perfect blue and Audrey looked natural and gorgeous. There were so many colors flooding my vision, I was ecstatic. Seeing the way these photos came out gave me confidence in myself, and inspired me to do more. This was a challenge because I don’t do this type of work normally, and I definitely don’t play with this kind of lighting, almost ever. I arrived early to make sure I was set up to get good shots, and got to drink beer and have fun while I was on the job. Love these dudes and their music, and I love how they perform together as well. I got even luckier when we met and she told me they needed photographing so she could get them up online. We took a walk in one of my favorite places, the snow recently thawed, carried a couple props we found funny, including a W Magazine with Kanye West on the cover (secretly hoping everyone gets the irony behind that). Harry was such a hilarious and perfect model that I wish I had thought of doing this earlier in my photography career, but it might not have been the same. I hope our years of friendship and comedic moments together shine through in his portraits, because I’ve never been so relaxed or comfortable while taking somebody’s photograph. There was no way I could have known how on the mark I’d be able to match their color palettes, and with vintage it’s easy to make a “women’s” shirt work on anybody, and vise versa. Gender norms are irrelevant (all the time and) especially when bright spring colors are on the table. The boots were just extra luck. I contacted Annie, knowing that she’s fun, open minded and very fashionable. My friend Stephanie from Nestful Vintage let me use her bigger studio space. I wanted to get funky with some props on the back drop, and that ended up being our only option anyway because it was pouring spring rain. Her mission is natural fibers and high quality vintage materials, sometimes refurbished and repaired to make the garment as quality as possible. This time around we wanted an out-of-office editorial style shoot to display the lightweight and comfortable spring garments she has available this season. The beach and the breeze that came with the day we scheduled was perfect to capture a mood where it’s not quite hot enough to swim, but definitely the best weather for lounging. I met up with Alizah (a local cool girl I’d been wanting to share inspiration with), and we got ready in my studio. She’s talented at many artful things, but especially at applying her own makeup, which I happily let her do herself, as I gelled her baby bangs into cute chunky curls split down the middle. Around Valentine’s day I envisioned my good friend Ayu as an overly embellished female Cupid. It wasn’t plausible at the time and I reformed the vision into one for spring. All gold makeup and soft gloss on the lips, a scavenged, painted and bedazzled bow and arrow for props, and full gold jewelry and pastel lingerie garments from Cotillion Bureau brought this concept to life. Working as slowly and as carefully as I probably ever have (I’m one to just throw some glitter on a model, fluff their brows and call it a day) I created a dramatic lid, white freckles and an orange lip to compliment the era mixed accessories we had to showcase. While building an editorial shoot using an array of beautiful garments from Cotillion Bureau, I realized that two of my favorites were already green tones, and I built from that going forward, adding sparkling silver tones and floral bags. Catherine, who I’ve had the pleasure to work with once before, waltzed shoulder deep through weedy fields to get the perfect wild flowers and the perfect sunlight, and also got lucky with an old abandoned stone building near the area we were exploring. I had been waiting for the right time to shoot this embroidered and lace Rococo style gown handmade by my friend Katie. Jessie loved the dress and was a perfect fit for it as well. We thought her modern bob, a bright red lip and her perfectly matched red vintage boots was all we needed in terms of styling to turn her to a rebellious maiden straight out of a Jane Austen novel. We shot on a hot summer evening in the historic Strawbery Banke museum, after hours when there weren’t any other people milling about, and where Jess blended in like one of the re-enactors. Even better when it finally happened, she agreed to rock a glamorous cowgirl get up and ride the first horse I’ve gotten to pose for my camera. On the hottest night of the summer (97 degrees) we met at her horse barn and I watched her groom the horse she’s been riding for over four years. The glimmering gold blouse is a vintage find I’ve been hoarding for years waiting until the right time, and it glowed in the setting sun. It is a collection of personal black and white film photographs and corresponding poems, written over the course of five months. The show was up temporarily and only viewable by the public for two nights.
